 CASE HISTORY:
  • Ranchwood Veterinarian Hospital located in south Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has an outstanding reputation for animal care for over two decades. Dr. D. Guthrie DVM (“Doc”) is the practicing doctor and proprietor of the hospital.
  • Doc has offered boarding services for pet owners for many years and developed a long-standing clientele as a result. The pets are housed in individual pens in a special room, specifically designed with climate control and purposed for sanitary conditions. The room has old concrete floors and cinder block walls dividing the pens.
  • Doc was faced with two seperate problems in this boarding area. Number one; the floor, being unsealed concrete, had absorbed pet odors through the years which was impossible to remove as well as difficult to mask. Number two; Painting the walls within the pens had been a constant “RE-DO” maintenance because of male dogs urinating on the walls. In an effort to keep the pens as sanitary as possible, Doc and his employees were forced to utilize harsh cleaning chemicals such as bleach and ammonia to clean up after the boarder. The result of this was a stripping of the paint from the walls due to the harsh chemicals.

 SOLUTION:

  • Due to the seriousness of the situation, Dr. Guthrie was determined to resolve the problem at any cost. Fortunately one of the Doc’s employees was affiliated with a protective coatings contractor that specialized in concrete renovation and the installation of elastomeric coatings. Shark Skin Industrial Coatings Co. located in OKC was contacted and asked to inspect the hospital and make a recommendation for a long-term solution for the problem.
  • Once the inspection was complete it was determined that a long lasting, flexible coating would be required for ease of cleaning and maintaining. A certified applicator for Elastomer Specialties, Inc. the owners of Shark Skin decided to consult with the manufacturer to determine the exact surface preparation procedure, floor treatment and protective coating to use.
  • As soon as the system had been worked out between the manufacturer and contractor, it would only take a few days to complete the entire installation procedure. However, one of the main concerns Doc had was down time! He explained that after the final coating was in place he needed to re-open the holding pens as soon as possible. The decision was made to go with a rapid curing polyurea coating system in order to meet Dr. Guthrie’s strict requirements.

  • The actual size of the project was approximately 3000 square feet including walls, doors, and floor area.
  • Once completed the pet odor was gone, all the coated surface area was easy to wash down and clean, and the final appearance beautified the entire kennel. Tuff and durable, the polyurea coating installed by Shark Skin is designed to last for years.
  • Dr. Guthrie and the employees were extremely pleased with the application process and final appearance of the project.

 MATERIAL:
  • Products specified:
    1. Primer - PoxyPrime H2O, water based epoxy primer that cures rapidly.
    2. Base Coat - GatorHyde LP applied low pressure using a Condor Plural Component Pump manufactured by Elastomer Specialties, Inc. Material was installed at approximately 60 mils with a light non-skid textured coating.
    3. Top Coat - PolySpar HP, a color stable, aliphatic polyurea top coat that is resistance to animal urine, was rolled down in a two-coat process at approximately 10-15 mils.

 INSTALLATION:

  • Prior to installation of the GatorHyde LP system, the entire floor, walls and doors were washed using a 3,000 psi pressure washer in order to eliminate all the failed paints and to remove as much of the contaminants as possible.
  • Once the surface preparation was completed the entire area designated to receive GatorGard LP was professionally masked off to protect the rest of the facility from over spray.
  • The primer (PoxyPrime H2O) was then installed in accordance with manufacturers specifications, and allow the normal dry time.
  • GatorHyde LP was then applied at approximately 45-55 mils using a Condor low pressure, plural component pump system.
  • The final application of PolySpar HP was then rolled down over the GatorHyde at a film thickness of 10 – 15 mils.
  • A final note! Once installed Dr. Guthrie found that the coated floors were warmer in the winter months than the previous bare concrete.
