Polyurea Floor Coating
Picture of completed ES-9500 installation

 BACKGROUND:
  • The owner had previously used an epoxy floor coating and was having problems with the coating chipping when heavy steel objects were dropped.
  • The idea was that by using an elastomeric coating the chipping problem could be eliminated.
  • The owner also needed to have access to the facility as soon as possible.
  • The building was a standard metal frame constructed over a concrete slab, saw cut joints every 15 feet.
 MATERIAL:
  • Product specified: ES-9500 ElastoKast 95. A hybrid polyurea, low pressure spray elastomer.
  • Gel time of approximately 3-5 minutes.
  • Product develops a hardness of 95 shore A.
  • ES-9500 is an aromatic, not considered to be color stable. Owner wanted dark gray and was not concerned about minimal color change.
  • The material is a 1:2 ratio and requires a low pressure, plural component pump in order to be mixed and sprayed.
  • Equipment: “CONDOR” Deluxe Plural Component Pump, manufactured by ESI.
 INSTALLATION:
  • Prior to installation, the entire floor was shot blasted to obtain the recommended profile.
  • Once surface preparation was completed and control joints were filled and properly trimmed, the contractor, Golden Floor Preparation of Golden, Colorado installed IsoPrime using 18 inch medium nap rollers.
  • IsoPrime primer was allowed to cure approximately 2-3 hours.
  • The product was installed using a two-pass system.
    • The first pass contained both the base and intermediate coats, applied at a dry film thickness of 70 mils.
    • Because of the rapid cure time and development of high early green strength, a 20 foot x 20 foot section was coated. The operator then returned and immediately applied a 20 mil stipple coat for non-skid purposes.
  • The entire project took approximately 5-8 hours to complete.
  • Equipment: “CONDOR” Deluxe Plural Component Pump capable of delivering a 1:2 ratio material.
  • Material was applied unheated.
  • Ambient installation temperature was approximately 60° F.
  • Once application was complete, all equipment and masking was removed and the floor was immediately opened to traffic.
