Polyurea wall and floor coating
Completed View Of ElastoGard ARC-SLO, Polyurea Application.

 CASE HISTORY:
  • American Manhassett Shopping Mall located in Manhassett Long Island, New York had been looking for a specific coating system that could be applied to their hallway floors and wall areas with limited down time.
  • The existing wall paint and floor covering had deteriorated to the point that the business owners wilh offices in the basement area wanted to see some action taken by the management company to address the issue.
  • The amount of traffic in the area required the owner and management company to look towards newer technology that could provide longer life to the coating system yet at the same time offer a cosmetic appeal that would satisfy the tenants.

 SOLUTION:

  • Advanced Application Group, owned and operated by Mr. Ray Romeo, was contacted by the Americana Manhassett, Management Company to see if AAG had a system that would meet their needs.
  • Having years of experience as a specialty coating and epoxy flooring contractor, in the New York City area, Advanced Application Group, a certified, Elastomer Specialties, low-pressure polyurea applicator decided to specify a polyurea elastomer for the hall floor area and a polyaspartic polyurea for all the walls.
  • The superintendent of the project and VP Sales for AAG, Mr. Mario Colletti, had concerns with over spray during application however Mario adequately masked off adjacent walls during the floor installation and used large evacuation fans to move air flow out of the hall ways.
  • The lighting was a problem in the hall corridors so it was determined to use a light gray coating for the floors and an off white, high gloss coating for the walls in order to lighten up the area.

 MATERIAL:

  • Products specified:
    1. Primer - PoxyPrime H2O, water based epoxy primer that cures rapidly at ambient temperatures.
    2. Floor Coating - ElastoGard ARC-SLOW, a two component, 1:1 ratio aromatic polyurea spray coating developed specifically for installation through the CONDOR, low-pressure, plural component pump. Both the polyurea and the pump system is manufactured by Elastomer Specialties, Inc.
    3. Wall Coating - PolySpar LP-1, is a two component, 2:3 ratio polyaspartic, thin film coating system developed for wall applications where substrates can be either concrete block, tilt up, sheet rock or wood.

 INSTALLATION:

  • Prior to the installation of the floor and wall coating systems, the contractor, AAG, washed down the wall area, then removed all the loose and unsound paint. Next the contractor, under the supervision of Mr. Colletti, cleaned and prepared the concrete floor using a rotary floor sander, in order to adequately remove the sealer from the concrete surface.
  • Once the surface preparation was complete, the crew then masked off the floor area and using the PoxyPrime H20, primed the concrete block and sheet rock wall areas of the hall way. After the primer cured, (approximately 30 minutes) the PolySpar LP-1 was applied using a Condor Deluxe Plural component pump system, set up on a 2:3 ratio. The material was installed in two separate applications, each of about 7-9 mils. The final coat consisted of a light raindrop texture.(Color Light Gray)
  • The floor area was the last to be coated. Once the walls were covered the floor was then primed using Elastomer Specialties, PoxyPrime H20. After the primer had dried, ElastoGard Arc-Slow, medium gray polyurea was added to the low-pressure Condor pump, the chain and sprocket was changed back to a 1:1 ratio from the previous set up. The coating was then installed at approximately 60-80 mils with the final coat consisting of a stipple finish to create a non-skid surface.
  • The total size of the contract was approximately 21,000 square feet of polyurea coating and was completed in late September, 2003.
